Have you ever been riding along and all of sudden you are famished? You are starving and all you can think about is giant hamburgers or an all you can eat buffet? Most cyclists agree that by the time you feel hungry, it is too late. Riders should be eating or "feeding" on the bike throughout the ride to keep up their strength and energy, as to avoid "bonking". According to the Cycling blog, bonking means:
That you haven’t taken in enough carbohydrates and have exhausted your body’s glycogen stores, leaving you with abnormally low blood glucose levels. Your body can only store enough glucose (in the form of glycogen) to last you for about 90 minutes of moderate exercise.
Unfortunately, bonking during a ride can turn a great ride with friends into a painful event. Bonking is more than just being hangry, it can have serious physical and emotional side effects as well.
The symptoms of a bonk can vary, but on a physical side you will generally feel extremely weak and tired and you may shake, sweat a lot and feel dizzy or light-headed. You may also have heart palpitations and will probably be very hungry. Bonking can also affect the brain as that too burns glucose, and you may feel anxious, irritable, confused and emotional.
But here at the Boob Ride, we've got you covered! We have some fantastic nutrition sponsors who will have product at every stop. There will be no boinking on our watch!
Our newest nutrition sponsor is KIND®. The people at KIND believe in inspiring and celebrating kindness by improving the way we live, eat and relate to one another. They hope to foster communities that are healthier, more empathetic and embrace our shared humanity. We couldn't agree more on their mission and we are excited to partner with them for the first time this year.
KIND products are made from nutritionally-dense ingredients like whole nuts, fruits and whole grains - no secret ingredients and no artificial flavors, preservatives or sweeteners.
We are happy to announce that Honey Stinger will be donating product to us again this year. We love partnering with Honey Stinger because not only are their products tasty, but they are all natural and actually help your body before, during, and after exercise. "Honey is rich in carbohydrates, making it ideal fuel for working muscles."
- Before exercise: When eaten before activity, it is released into the system at a steady rate throughout the activity.
- During exercise: Helps muscles stay nourished longer, delays fatigue.
- After exercise: Research shows ingesting a combination of carbohydrates and protein immediately following exercise refuels and decreases muscle soreness.
Hungry for something chocolaty? something sweet and crunchy? Then we have you covered! Zone Perfect is back again this year with their tasty bars that are high in protein, vitamins, and minerals. They have several different flavors and whether you are riding 30, 60, or 90 miles - they hit the spot!
