For Whom Do You Ride?

Tell us for whom you ride. Do you ride for your mom, your wife, your sister, your friend, or do you ride because you have been diagnosed with breast cancer? We want to create a place to share stories and to create a community of strength for those who may be struggling with disease. Please use the comments section to add your story.

Calling All Volunteers

Dedicated to the Ones We Love, 2018

Each year we dedicate the ride to one person who has battled breast cancer. This year we are dedicating the ride to Waleska “Wally” Roling. Wally is the sister of my long-time friend, John. Wally’s battle started in 2015 when she was diagnosed the stage III, triple negative breast cancer. As many of you know, this type can be very aggressive and is more likely to reoccur than other subtypes of breast cancer. Wally and her doctors immediately started treatment: first with chemo, then a double Continue reading →

The Boob Ride D-Cup routes are challenging (brutal is more like it).  Many of you have done other century rides and may think a ride with less than 90 miles is not a big deal. Well, it is. They both finish in Solana Beach But they are Continue reading →

Early Birds Get Good Deals We have had nearly a 300% increase in registrations this year! WOW, what a great response! Thank you for our supporters that are already on board. The defender of the 2017 Yellow Bra is already signed up. Rumor has it that he is training hard.  At this rate, we may close Early Bird registration early and cap the event's capacity. In theory, Early Bird registration will be open until 3/1/18. However, if we hit our goal, it could close any Continue reading →

Recovery, Cancer, and Exercise

At The Boob Ride, we encourage everyone to get out and ride. The benefits of exercise on our bodies and our minds have been long-studied and well documented. But what happens if you are recovering from an injury, illness, or surgery? How do you know when to push through and when to rest? For the past five months, I've been grappling with these questions as I recover from ankle tendon surgery. As with many recovery processes, I find that I start to feel stronger so Continue reading →

Unbelievable Results from a Breast Cancer Drug Trial in Amsterdam

This is a remarkable finding out of Amsterdam. This study, which also took place at NHS hospitals in Manchester, showed that in 11% of the cases the tumors had disappeared entirely, and in 17% of the patients the tumors had shrunk to less than 5mm.  How did they do it? The researchers combined two drugs, Herceptin and Tyverb and gave them to the patients before the usual treatments of surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation.  While the effects of the treatment are still being studied, the current theory Continue reading →

The Boob Ride CA Donates to Breast Cancer Angels

The Boob Ride CA 2017 was a pivotal event for us. The Breast Cancer Angels charity donates 100% of their funds raised to local breast cancer patients in need, which we think is Continue reading →

Reiki Therapy – West Meets East for Healing

When someone we love is given a cancer diagnosis, many of us will not stray from the Western techniques of chemotherapy and radiation. However, some people seek out alternative therapies and treatments. I think that patients and their families benefit when the best of both worlds come together to promote healing. I was surprised and excited that Hoag is now offering Reiki  classes for their patients and their families. This is a Japanese technique that reduces stress and promotes relaxation and healing. Loosely translated Reiki Continue reading →

Is Your Bike Ready?

It had been awhile since I got out on my bike, so we decided to take a short easy ride through Huntington Beach. We only had a few hours before it was supposed to rain, so we set out on a beautiful brisk Sunday morning. We road near the pier, checking out the sites and trying not to hit oblivious tourists, dog walkers, and random weird stuff on the path. We were enjoying ourselves and the day and happened upon a cyclist with an interesting issue.  He was Continue reading →

Post-Surgery Breast Cancer Strength Building Workout

One of the most substantial issues that my mom has had to deal with after her mastectomy was the loss of strength in her arm. Since mastectomies are radical surgeries that take out the surrounding tissue and any other structure that maybe compromised, many patients are left with stiffness, loss of strength, and loss of mobility. My mom takes senior circuit training classes to help her rebuild her muscles (which my niece affectionately refers to as geezersize), but if that isn't for you, you might Continue reading →

Dedicated to the Ones We Love

Breast cancer scares me more than anything else I have come across. It has no boundaries and it attacks without consideration of socio-economic status, race, or lifestyle. The two most significant risks for developing breast cancer are being a woman and getting older. The part that gets me the most, is that cancer can develop even if you eat well and exercise and take care of yourself. Take my high school friend, Christine. She has dedicated herself to living a clean lifestyle with health and Continue reading →

Training for Your First Metric Century

Riding your first metric century is a physical and psychological challenge. Once you have conquered your first one, you will feel proud of the accomplishment. In order to prepare for a metric, you will need to spend time on your bike getting physically fit and psychologically comfortable with the distance. While some of my teammates and Paul have ridden many centuries, I have only ridden metric centuries.  But the important part is to train. My first one was a VERY BIG DEAL to me. I had planned to do Continue reading →

One of the nonprofit organizations that I really felt a connection to is the UK based breast cancer nonprofit called CoppaFeel!.  The organization was started by Kris Continue reading →
